About the Location
Richmond, three kilometres east of Melbourne’s central business district, has served as a residential, commercial, and townhomes district, as well as a residential neighbourhood more recently. Until 1994, Richmond was also a municipality. Punt Road, which went through Melbourne, was its western border, and the Yarra River, which flowed through green Hawthorn, was its eastern boundary. The river looping around to face South Yarra and Toorak created Richmond’s southern boundary. Collingwood is bordered on the north by Victoria Parade. Richmond was named after the Richmond Hill neighbourhood in London. Kew Gardens is close by, as is its London equivalent. Richmond, along with Cremorne in the south and Burnley in the east, is a suburb of the former municipality.
Richmond is bordered on the west by Richmond Hill, which is also known as Dockers Hill. Four church spires stand atop it. To the east, the land dips away from the river, to the north, the Collingwood flat, and to the south, the Burnley low region.
